What is Humane Education?

Humane Education is based on the concept that all life is precious and is practiced by teaching young people the value and importance of treating other living creatures with kindness. In Belize, probably more than most places in the world, the cycle of life is all around us. Belize is a country that treasures and values its natural resources and many Belizeans have worked hard to ensure that much of this beautiful country is kept as natural reserves. This means that some animals are now well protected and respected, but not all. Children in Belize may encounter many animals as they grow up, both domestic and wild.
It has been well established that children that learn to be kind to animals are also kinder to people, are better at communicating and are more likely to become helpful and caring members of the community as adults. Humane education also helps children develop better interpersonal skills such as speaking and listening while improving their attitudes towards caring for others. Humane Education promotes empathy and respect for all life.
How does Humane Education fit in with formal schooling?

The Be Kind Belize Humane Education programme has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the Belize National Curriculum at Standard 2, 3 & 4 and is aimed at children between the ages of 8-10 years old. Lessons will complement and enhance studies in math, science, social studies, art and health. Lesson plans can be adapted as needed to fit in with the principles of different schools and as all lessons are interactive, the children are more likely to learn effectively because they will be personally involved in the learning process.
Why would a Be Kind Belize programme help our school?

All Be Kind Belize lessons are taught by trained volunteers, who will work closely with teachers, teaching assistants and other school faculty to ensure that everyone can benefit. Teachers who are interested in participating or using lessons as part of their own teaching programs will be able to undertake free training with Be Kind Belize. All Be Kind Belize lessons are given for free. By introducing this programme to the school, you will enable the students to broaden their understanding of the importance of kindness and comprehending the consequences of their actions as part of fun, engaging and interactive activities.
Teaching children through and about animals is a sound educational tool and provides an exciting context through which children are enthused to learn and apply developing skills and understanding.
The design of the programme helps children to improve their ability to resolve conflicts and consider the consequences of their actions.
The Dog Bite Safety workshop is particularly important as it enables children to make informed decisions about their own safety and welfare.
What does a Be Kind Belize programme involve?

A Be Kind Belize Volunteer will visit your school to discuss this with your principal and faculty. The basic course is four weeks, with a one hour class given by a volunteer twice a week. So your students would attend 8 lessons and also be involved with some homework assignments between those lessons. At the end of every course, all children will receive a Be Kind Belize graduation certificate. On occasion, when appropriate, animals may be brought in to visit the children and give them some 'hands-on' experiences. There are two important areas covered in the course: Domestic animals and wild animals.
