Employment Opportunity at Belize Bird Rescue


Position: Avian Care Assistant & Handyman

​

Belize Bird Rescue (BBR) is excited to announce an opening for a Belizean National or Resident to join our dedicated team.

​

BBR is a registered NGO committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of all bird species in Belize. This is a full-time position, beginning with a 3-month trial period and leading to permanent employment for the right candidate.

About the Role

 

As part of our small and committed team, the successful candidate will receive full training and participate in in the following activities at BBR:

  • Diet preparation and general bird husbandry

  • Enclosure cleaning and maintenance

  • Repairs and renewals to existing aviaries

  • Enclosure building (welding skills required)

  • Simple plumbing tasks and property maintenance (cold-water system)

  • Basic carpentry — building small roost boxes and perches

  • Safe operation of power tools

  • Small-scale weed eating and mowing

  • Tractor operation — bush-hogging trails and pulling trailers (on BBR property)

  • Driving a manual (stick-shift) pickup (preferred)

 

This position involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, so applicants should be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors. Above all, we’re looking for someone who is passionate about birds, wildlife, and animals of every kind.

 

Essential Requirements

 

Applicants must be:

  • Living close enough to Roaring Creek, Cayo District to commute daily

  • A Belizean National or Resident

  • Fluent in English and Spanish

  • Passionate about wildlife and willing to learn

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

 

Required Skills

  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to drive a manual (stick-shift) pickup

  • Ability to operate a tractor, trailer, and bush-hog on BBR property

  • Basic woodworking and plumbing skills

  • Competence with power tools (cordless and bench saws, drills, chainsaw, weed eater)

  • Welding experience a distinct advantage

Working Hours

 

Monday to Friday: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm (1-hour lunch break at 12:00 pm)

Weekend duty: 7:30 am – 9:30 am (required at least one weekend morning every two weeks, with additional pay)

 

Additional Information

  • No prior experience in avian rehabilitation is required — full training will be provided.

  • There is no closing date; we will take our time to find the right person.

  • Due to the nature of our work, please do not visit the facility without an appointment.

  • A clean police record will be required for the successful candidate.

 

Starting Pay (with review after trail period)

 

BZD $310 per week after deductions (approximately $8.20 per hour)
