Project Coordinator

Position: Project Coordinator, Full-time Seasonal

Dates: -18-March to 18-July-2024 (4 months)

Salary: $2,500BZ per month + field ration stipend

Summary

Belize Bird Rescue, in collaboration with partner organizations in Belize will monitor and protect nests of the globally endangered Yellow-headed Parrot (Amazona oratrix).

 

We are currently looking for a Field Team Leader and up to 3 Field Technicians to carry out the country-wide field effort in 2024. This will require daily field work under potentially difficult conditions. Camping will be required to maximize field time and reduce the threat of nest poaching. The work schedule during the field season is generally 10 days on, 4 days off.  

Duties:

  • Coordinate the schedule and involvement of technicians and any volunteers/collaborators including protected area managers

  • Coordinate and assist with line transect surveys for field team and any additional participants

  • Oversee scheduling and allotment of the overall field effort

  • Driving duties with safe and appropriate driving standards

  • Ensure proper training of staff and volunteers/collaborators for standardised data collection.

  • Ensure timely and accurate collection of nest monitoring data across field locations

  • Review datasheets to ensure quality data collection and maintain the nest monitoring database

  • Assist and coordinate with identification and extraction of at-risk chicks (under FD, PA Managers and BBR guidance and protocols)

  • Ensure field team employ proper use, maintenance and storage of  the field equipment

  • Keep the project director informed of project status; a summary of project activities, nest status, and any problems

  • Record bird activity through photos and videos to be made available to Project Leader

Preferred Requirements for Employment:

  • MS (Biology, Wildlife Science, or Natural Resource Management). Applicants with a BS with previous experience in project management are also encouraged to apply

  • Previous experience overseeing staff, technicians, or volunteers

  • Knowledge of bird life in Belize and/or Neotropics

  • Previous experience with nest monitoring is a plus

  • Experience using standard Microsoft products such as Word and Excel

  • Good physical condition (ability to climb trees and hike)

  • Valid driver’s license (standard shift)

  • Assist the Project Coordinator and Team Leader with the involvement of any volunteers

  • Ensure proper training of additional participants in accurate data collection (especially during line transect surveys)

  • Record bird activity through photos and videos to be made available to Project Leader

  • Collaborate with Protected Area Managers

 

Preferred Requirements for Employment

  • BS or Associate degree (Biology, Wildlife Science, or Natural Resource Management) preferred but not required

  • Knowledge of bird life in Belize and/or Neotropics a plus

  • Previous experience with nest monitoring is a plus

  • Good physical condition (ability to climb trees and hike)

  • Willingness to camp outdoors for extended periods of time

  • Clean driving license (stick shift) an advantage
