Second chance after a window strike

A juvenile Grey Hawk recovers and returns to the wild

A young Grey Hawk was recently brought into care after striking a window at a business in Belmopan – a common but often preventable cause of injury for birds.

Quick action from staff on site made all the difference. The hawk was safely contained and Belize Bird Rescue was contacted, ensuring he could receive prompt care.

From reports at the scene, the bird had been under pressure before the collision, likely being mobbed by larger birds. This behaviour is often seen when birds defend territory, and in the confusion, he appears to have struck the window while trying to escape.

On arrival, he showed signs of head trauma, a typical result of window strikes. With rest, supportive care, and a short period of recovery, he regained strength quickly.

Given the circumstances of the incident, it was decided not to return him to the same location. Once fully recovered, he was released at Belize Bird Rescue, giving him a safer environment to re-establish himself in the wild.

Window strikes remain one of the most frequent causes of bird injuries. Simple measures such as making glass more visible can significantly reduce these incidents and help protect wildlife.
